Sorry for the waiting game. Its been a busy past few weeks and my work has been cut out for me. To say nothing of the old pointed gender cliche which accuses males of lacking necessary skills required to multitask (arguably true or otherwise), it seems my mind compartmentalizes itself into detached sections and categories which run quite deep, few though they may be, and they keep me totally immersed in thought whenever I’m working on new material. Thus when I find myself at home in front of the fireplace in small-town millpond Midwest and I happen strike upon a new vein of inspiration, it’s hard for me to focus on anything else until I’ve explored that vein like a coal miner on an extensive underground course. Sometimes such tunnels of creativity and innovation lead me all over the map, sometimes they hit the wall at a dead end, sometimes I glimpse a glorious light at the end of the tunnel, sometimes it turns out to be a freight train. I’m covered in dirt because I’ve been crawling on my belly a few hundred feet below the surface for the past two weeks, and although Christmas was a swift and much needed respite, it’s back to work for the next handful of months. Goodbye now to the sun for I won’t see her for some considerable time.
This is a good thing.
If you are a creative person, perhaps you suffer from the same thing I do which has me constantly wondering if “I’ve still got it” after enough time has passed without either conception of completion of a given idea to suggest I’ve still got something exciting up my sleeve. Of course that’s nonsense and sometimes exactly what you NEED is this kind of amnesty granted by your intuition in order to move forward. You can run yourself into the ground if you never take a breath, the same as you can get into trouble if you let repose bloat and morph into lethargy or apathy. I hate the word “bloat.”
All this to say, I’m finally in the zone, totally focused on the next few rungs of the ladder and I’m excited to take in the view when I finally make it to the top. The thought is compelling and at this point, forward movement is almost as inspiring as the realization or accomplishment of a given creative idea itself. This means I am writing new songs like a madman, all of which I am terribly excited about. I’ve never collaborated much with outsiders (namely producers or co-writers) except for co-writing with my friend Matt and this new record marks a flying leap in that direction — because it’s new to me, because the thought is compelling, because I’ve never really done it before. I’m also mixing the new Dispatch record and it’s incredible.
As far as songwriting, and in the grand scheme of things, I’ve discovered an AMAZING network of veins and the coal mining down here is incredible. There are endless passages and shafts dying to be explored, hidden ducts and channels, tight squeezes, treacherous ledges, secret stairs and underground waterfalls; one could spend forever down here and the map keeps growing bigger by the day.
Thinking about a new record summer/fall of 2012. If you need me before then, I’ll be underground.

Well I’m pretty stoked for the new album as well…But I can’t be the only one worried about the aspect of collaboration? I mean, all of the other albums he’s made under Owl City have just been him…So I feel like other people working with him could detract from the quality of his music, because its so unique. But at the same time, he has worked with others under different band names, like Swimming With Dolphins. I wish I knew how much of the work he did with them, though, because the album he was involved with (Ambient Blue) was incredible. But the next album (Water Colours), which Adam was not involved with, kind of sucked. So it seems as if he was what was making it awesome. But it still scares me. Because Owl City is my favorite, and it has always been just him…Adam, just make sure you do what you do with this new project, don’t let anyone change your work unless it’s for the better.

Life is an adventure — as explorers… we scale mountains, unveil hidden coves, and walk among the stars. As a fellow artist and adventurer, I can relate to the false doubt and self-accusation that sometimes bores its way into one’s consciousness, but, as you stated, this is nonsense… and if it is to be taken seriously it should be to push ourselves to improve even further, pressing us forward to hike ever higher up that mountain until we reach its peak.
Needless to say, you’ve continued to grow artistically over the years (although the talent has, undoubtedly, always been there), and I’m sure you’ll never cease to surprise us. From your oldest works to your latest album, there is not one song I’ve come across that isn’t noteworthy. All of your projects and collaborations are inspiring, motivating, and lovingly composed.
It’s wonderful to hear that you’ve discovered yet another goldmine of opportunity and inspiration, and I eagerly look forward to your next brilliant concoction. God has graced you with a wonderful gift and, by golly, is it remarkable. Keep up the awesome work!

As for creativity, I know exactly what you mean, I consider myself something of a writer and visual artist, and the mild stage often hits me just when its the most inconvenient, and bursts of creativity appear when I have a million other things to be doing… but enough rambling. Just keep being yourself exploring those mines, and I hope you strike diamond soon. :)

I can’t express how excited I am, but…I agree with Swagadactle. Owl City feels so personal and real because it’s just you doing it all yourself, writing the lyrics and making the music. The thought of collaborations just…kinda takes the personality out of the album in advance. I’ve always loved connecting with the music and knowing it’s straight from your heart, so the thought of others producing and co-writing (especially co-writing) the songs sends an ominous shiver down my spine.

At first, I was worried if you were subjecting yourself to a life of work and monotony, then I literally laughed aloud at myself. How could music possible be boring and monotonous, or entail the notoriety of “work?” (I feel smart when I use big words, I hope that makes sense.) Not only that, but it seems to be one of the most important things to you that you continue to dig, like the metaphor in this post. Yes, I do suffer from the same thing as you do.
I write a lot, like poetry and stories (or is it story’s?). There are some periods in my life in which I write lots of poems and there are periods in my life in which I have enough time to continue on my stories. In some periods, however, I have neither time to write stories nor inspiration to write poems.
Like now. I’m just too busy with my study and work, to write. So when I have time or inspiration, I’m always thinking: “Will I be able to write as good as I used to do?”
It really is a relief that I’m not the only one suffering from that. Thank you for making me see that!
I honestly could not be any more excited than I am currently. All of your work is truly inspiring and I can’t wait to hear more! I think collaborating with others is a fantastic idea and I will certainly be waiting in anticipation!

I have been trying to make choral arrangements and I was extremely frustrated for six months, then, I tapped the whole thing out on the piano in about ten minutes.

Immer und amen. I’ve actually found that the best thing for getting the songwriting elves in my mind started is writing a novel. No joke, I wrote at least ten songs in two weeks, scribbled beginning to polished end. I still haven’t finished my novel, because I needed a break from songwriting.
So, before you disappear too far underground, find a lamp. Wouldn’t want any amazing melodies or lyrics slipping away just because it’s too dark to see them. Rock on.

My friend gave me the link to this blog a few months ago, but I somehow lost it. I’ve been frantically searching for it, and I’ve finally found it. And its a good thing I did.
Adam, I’m sure your told this with every post, every scream of your fans, but I’m going to say it again: you are amazing. My connection to you is something nobody will ever understand. I’ve listened to everything of yours. Sky Sailing, Port Blue, Owl City, my personal favorite being Port Blue because I’ve fallen deeply in love with instrumentals. I always have music playing, even if its just mentally, and at least 20 times a day, yours is blasting in my ears, so loud I can’t hear anything else. Sitting in Algebra, drumming my fingers on the desk to the beat of A Little Opera Goes a Long Way. On the bus in the morning, half asleep, dreaming to a Port Blue song. Listening to Hello Seattle until I fall asleep at night.
Adam, I’ve never made such an emotional connection with a music artist before. When I was younger, I didn’t even listen to the words in yours songs because they didn’t make sense to me. They all seemed like crazy metaphors. I mean, a song about a wig? Really? But the music was pretty, and so were the words, so I kept listening. And as I got older, I started to worry less about what the words meant. I found meaning in them anyway. Your songs spin me a different story each time I listen. I means something different each time.
Alright. I’m going to end this lengthy worshiping-Adam-part of the post and move on to the blog. But I’d go on for pages if I could.
What? Will the amazing Adam actually be coming out with another album? But. . .but. . .I’m not ready! I haven’t tracked down each and every one of your songs yet and listened to them repeatedly yet! Which you, sir, are making extremely difficult. You just have so many! Not that its a bad thing. I want more. But I also want to listen to them all.

Oh, Adam. You’re coal mining has gotten me much jealous of the hard stone in my tunnel. And the fact that hard work does not always promise what you want, has gotten me down a small percentage.
I hope that I can blossom a new tunnel in my thoughts to plunder into.

But when I finally do I enjoy reading them, your writing style is enjoyable to read and very inspiring.
I must also confess that I am also still “mining” as well, as I slowly discover/dig up some of your older work..gems in the ground so to speak. Well, music is something to be savoured.

So sorry for that, had to vent through my phone because my sister is still sleeping in her bed. So very, very, very excited about a new album coming out. Inmy opinion, its been too long without a new owl city song… for my overly creative and overactive brain so swiftly and far to quickly consumes, internalizes, and interprettes new songs like a hungery child consumes an unhealthy amount of sweets if given the chance.
On the other hand, this has given me the inspiration to stop being a procrastinator and March into the dark unknown coalmine of my musical inspirations, sit down at the piano despite my family being around, and pound away at the melody in my brain. I shall never know the feeling of accomplishment until i begin… so today, after I clean my not so creatively cluttered bedroom, i shall sit at the piano and write.
Please, PLEASE don’t rush the new album Adam. I’m as stoked as everyone else for a new Owl City album, but please don’t compromise quality for profit. You’ve been somewhat of a poster child for the anti-establishment musician, i.e. you focus on quality and genuineness rather than profit or appealing to the lowest common denominator; please don’t depart from that by releasing an album before it’s ready.

Hello once again. Just thought I’d comment again and express my ever-growing excitement I possess whenever I think about this new record. It’s uplifting and brilliant to hear and I cannot wait.
I can’t get enough of Ocean Eyes. I know it was released in ’09 but it’s the album I bought in order to get a sense of what you were. The songs on there are fabulous. The favourite (for me) has to be Vanilla Twilight because of it’s sheer beauty.
I thank you for making All Things Bright and Beautiful as it was the soundtrack to the ending of ’11 for me personally. The snippet of Dreams Don’t Turn To Dust reminds me of eating Ben & Jerry’s in the summertime.
What I’m trying to say is that I simply cannot wait to have a little listen to any bits of new material you have. I adore you, Adam, and every piece of music that you create.
