A Literary Sandwich of Epic Proportions

As the result of spending countless hours slouched in uncomfortable chairs at 35,000 feet over the better half of Eastern Asia, I am 319 pages into book one of The Inheritance Cycle and it’s blowing my mind. I have yet to see the film of the same name (partially because a few of my friends have suggested I steer clear of it) so I know virtually nothing about the book, the series, or the author, I just started reading. I enjoy stories that are easy to lose myself in and this one does the job nicely. I’m totally into it.

Of course there are a slew of obvious comparisons to be drawn between Eragon and The Lord of the Rings, but I’ll be the first to admit that any epic fantasy of my own (written as a fifteen-year-old high school grad) would inevitably bear TONS of comparisons to other renown literary works in the same vein, especially given I’m an admirer of the genre. This is not criticism but merely the positive pointing out of similarities. Nothing but props to Christopher Paolini. The story is a flowery masterpiece of prose, plot and composition and I find myself wishing I too had the tremendous talent and resolve required to craft such a complex work of art. The guy is a genius.

Action, legend, adventure, mystery, revenge, danger, suspense, heist, peril, uncertainty, folklore, mythology — all savory toppings I prefer on a masterfully constructed literary sandwich of epic proportions.

I’ve acquired a taste for epic fantasy and Eragon, by all means, is hitting the spot.

I have been wanting to read Eragon! Now maybe my mom will let me. I so look forward to your blog posts on Mondays. Thank you!

  2. Victoria says:

I LOVE The Inheritance Cycle! Super excited to hear that you’re enjoying it! It’s one of my favorite book series in the world.
The final book comes out next Tuesday. I’m so stoked to read it, but I’m gonna be so sad when it’s over.

  3. Winona says:

Awesome! I was actually wondering if you’ve read the Inheritance Cycle already. It’s a really nice story, and you could have picked a better time to read it than now, especially since the wait for the last book is going to be over by November 8!

And yeah, if I were you I’d steer clear of the movie. (It wasn’t a very good rendition of the story)

  4. Charissarr says:

im tempted to read this now!! all of my friends have.

    get well soon!!

  5. Meghan says:

    Love this book!
    Get well soon!
    Best wishes!

  6. Haley Clark says:

This is one of my favourite book series and yesss, you’re picking up on the awesomeness too (and good timing, I might add)!! College student me is finally happy that the final book is coming out (I started reading these in Jr. High). But I’m not sure what my nights are going to be like… Not like I get much sleep anyways. The word descriptions are simply delicious as the books go on and waft you away on a breeze of comforting literary skill unlike most of what’s out there in young adult literature right now. Everyone turns around praising each new fad for what it has to offer but some that come along mirror this world and show us a new one, and Eragon is one that does that for me.

And thank you Adam for putting out your music and thoughts with such audacity and purity, and honoring the Lord through that too. Not a lot of people in entertainment can do that… And that’s what makes you different. You’re not in entertainment but are merely expressing yourself and it’s beautiful. As an introvert who’s struggled with a lot of the things you’ve been able to share you really are a beacon of hope for a lot of us.

you’re right, he’is cool…young boy create a beautiful fantasy book. Read it about 5 or 4 years ago….

  8. Dasha says:

I have never read this but I might have to, being the Lord of the Rings lover that I am. I love fantasy in literature. It distracts me for a little while from the worries of life and lets me read about other peoples’ worries about life. :) Anyway, Tolkien can’t be beat but I’ll see what I can do.

(P.S. Do you ever have to say “no pun intended”?)

  9. Danae says:

You may also enjoy The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, another epic fantasy with beautiful prose. I need to re-read the Inheritance Cycle before I dive into the last book. Can’t wait!

  10. Isn’t it awesome?!! You’ll LOVE the rest :D. And then of course the last book of the cycle comes out on November 8, my 19th birthday!! I know I already said that on your last post, but oh well :)

  11. Joel Wyncott says:

Have fun with your new series! And let me know when I can send you mine. ^^

    God bless,
    - Joel

  12. Priscilla says:

I know exactly what you mean. I’ve not yet read any of Christopher Paolini’s books, but I can relate with another series. There are these books called Ranger’s Apprentice written by John Flanagan. The idea is based off of The Lord of the Rings (mainly the Rangers). There are several obvious similarities between these two epic fantasies, but they both consist of everything I look for in a fantasy book, which you pretty much stated: action, legend, adventure, mystery, revenge, danger, suspense, heist, peril, uncertainty, folklore, and mythology.
And it’s not like Flanagan copied Tolkien. He used some ideas from The Lord of the Rings to spin a new story that takes place in a whole other world.

Maybe you should try reading the Ranger’s Apprentice series once you’ve finished Paolini’s books! I got my dad and younger brother to start reading them, and they both LOVE the series.

    Happy Reading!

  13. Swagadactle says:

This book looks pretty #swag, bro.

  14. Laila Afifa says:

AGREEEE with you. and yes you’ll love the whole series. and im waiting for the last one :)

enjoy your reading, Adam. Get well soon :)

  15. Kyra Ilyankoff says:

This makes me so happy!! I too have read this book, and am actually on the 3rd one, having just finished Eldest last night. I’m so happy that you’re enjoying it though!!! It’s definitely a fantastic tale. :) Hang in there, Adam. The days receive you with love and grace despite the hardships. Stay safe, and always have fun!!

  16. Dellie says:

    Wow!!

I’ve wanted to read those books for a long time, I just haven’t had the chance yet… It’s especially hard when you spend all your time studying for Uni and all your money is spent on text books for it… sigh….

  17. mheeowlcity (PRAISE GOD) says:

This Blog Post is totally Epic.. Let’s give around of applause for it’s amazing writer Adam Young :))
    – the book is quiet interesting I want to read it as well :)

  18. Katrina says:

You know what’s funny, when you first mentioned you were reading Eragon, I was half way through reading it myself for the 3rd time.

Did you know that the fourth and final book in the series comes out this week?

I’ve just started re-reading Eldest (book 2) in preparation, as it’s been a while since I read them. Also I watched Eragon today. The movie isn’t that bad. You just have your usual criticism when it comes to movies adapted from books.

  19. EmilyRuth says:

Aw, Adam, you’re talented! Your music makes sad days sunny!

  20. Reagan Ingram says:

I used to write fantasy novels. I wrote one called DAWN which was basically a Narnia fanfiction with lots of other magical things I threw in myself. I always needed a base and then I would proceed to color outside those lines.
Fantasy(and tigers) have always been what I write best.
I would LOVE to see you write a book,or something in that vein. Your blog entries are as close as we can get to that and I would love to see it expanded.

    -Lady Airplane

  21. Paula says:

Geez. My favourite person talking about my favourite book? that’s just too much for me to take.
    ._.

  22. Marielle says:

The books are just epic, you’re going to love them all~

  23. Pookie says:

I agree. First of all, the fact that a teenage boy has written 4 epic novels that are phenomenal is a marvel in itself, plus the story line is ridiculously amazing.
Since everyone else is throwing out book suggestions, I recommend Redwall by Brian Jacques, Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, and The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
AND DON’T WATCH THE MOVIE!! Watch the massacre of a great story line is painfully antagonizing

  24. Brandon V says:

Much too derivative for my liking, and his prose is flowery to the point of parody sometimes, though I’ll admit to having read all 3 due to some strange compulsion to finish what I started. Lol it’s definitely a series that would be right up your alley. :-)

  25. Alexandra says:

Woah woah woah woah woah…did he just say that he graduated high school at 15? O_O Someone correct me if I misunderstood that, please.

  26. Caitlin says:

Oh, I do like Eragon. What ate your thoughts on the Narnia and The Space Trilogy from CS Lewis?

  27. Hannah says:

Indeed! It is an excellent book to loose yourself in! I would suggest you do not watch the movie AT ALL! I is very cheesy :P

  28. Katherine says:

Inheritance Cycle is next on my list, after I finish the C.S. Lewis Space Trilogy. :)

Safe travels, God bless, and always your blog/music is always a huge gift to us all. :)

    Katherine

  29. GG says:

People have told me the movie is terrible (Including my dad, who used to be a movie critic and my mother, who used to work at columbia pictures.)
But the book is okay. Maybe I’ll read it. (I’d be done in, like, a day…Speed reader.)

  30. Amanda says:

I am so glad you’re liking Eragon, Adam! I personally love that series, and I’m glad to hear you enjoy it too! God Bless and best wishes!!

  31. Jenna L. says:

I’ve always wanted to read Eragon, and see the movie! Now I guess I must!

I hope you get to fealin’ better! I have been praying for you everyday!

  32. andrea says:

cool love lord of the ring never read it

  33. Lupe says:

I’ve only watched the movie… I’m into watching fantasy like movies but never reading those kinds of books. I think there just too wordy, doesn’t mean I think Eragon isn’t good. I bet if I did read it I would really like it, cuz I liked the movie. My brother has it so Adam if you want to borrow it you can ;) I hope that your flight is completely forgotten about while enjoying a good book. Smiles! And much Love :D

  34. SummerDragonfly says:

i must say, i totally agree with the people telling u to steer clear of the movie. do NOT watch the movie, its nothing like the book, its awful.

the book on the other hand is great. im reading it too for the second time partly because your reading it, and partly because i need to in order to get to the next book. its been so long i am afraid i forgot most of it so im rereading it. im trying to catch up with you lol, if only i knew exactly where you are in it, i would know how far i got to go. hope you enjoy it, seems we have similar taste in literature :).

but i repeat….do not watch the movie! lol just had to say it again

yeah your not going to read this, but oh well. you will see what i mean when you watch the movie.

  35. Madeline 18 says:

    Dear Adam,
Just another book to add to my list of must-reads! I’ve always meant to read that series, but have never gotten around to it. I really hope the tour’s going well, and I can’t wait to see you on the 6th at Carroll College! It’s going to be amazing, well, based on the concert I went to at Summerfest this…well…summer. God bless you, and may He continue to guide you and keep you safe and well.
    Love,
    Madeline

  36. Mica says:

I absolutely adore those books, I’ve read the entire series! If you’re looking for another series to read I totally recommend the Hunger Games. :D

  37. Rebecca says:

I love these books! And I love your music! Do you feel like writing a song about the book? ;) Wait til you get to the end of book 2, the twist is mindblowing. :D xxx

  38. Ivania says:

Aaaah! This is pretty much my favourite series ever! (Aside from Lord of The Rings, the Narnia chronicles, and The Mysterious Benedict Society.)

  39. Ventus says:

    Awesome book.KEEP READING ADAM!!!!!

  40. Susanna says:

I’ve been thinking about reading those books…

  41. Werecat says:

Haha, that is so funny! We are all jealous of your mindblowingness when it comes to song writing, and now your the jealous one! He also uses references from the earthsea books by Ursula Le Guin, those ones are pretty much classics too.

  42. Renny says:

NO ONE HAS MENTIONED HARRY POTTER YET? GASP! I’m a mega Harry Potter fan. If only braille wasn’t so big, I could have hard copies of all the books and not need another room. LOL

  43. Hannah -- Pleo -- dragon_blade says:

    Good book choice, Adam!! :D

KEEP READING FANTASY. :) It’s wonderful, and is SO easy to get lost in!! It’s absolutely delightful stuff, as long as you read the clean books. :)

    Have a magnificent read! :)

    Your Sister In Christ,
    HP

  44. Sam says:

I love the first one, but the second book I got bored with.

  45. Kathryn says:

Eragon is a great book, I’ve been meaning to go back and reread it, as I never got farther than the second book in the Inheritance Cycle. Your friends are right to tell you to steer clear of the movie however. I mean, you can see it if you’re curious, but just bear in mind that it’s terrible, and if I hadn’t been my brother’s ride home, I would have walked out of the theatre.

Stay safe and have a Happy Halloween!
    Kathryn

  46. Laura says:

I love fantasy to! Yeah, fantasy forever! Anyways, you’ve totally inspired me to read Eragon, so after I’m done with this really addicting book called “The Red Pyramid” Eragon is totally on my to-read list! also, I don’t know if i read it wrong, but did you say you wrote fantasies in high school? If you did, you should consider putting them on your blog cause your a fantastic writer! If you don’t want to, that’s fine to, it was just one of my random suggestions. Anyways, thanks for the epic blog post!

    -Laura :)

  47. Tara says:

I know tons of people have said it already but the Inheritance Cycle is AMAZING! The movie was terrible so definitely avoid it at all costs. I’m looking forward to the fourth book and can’t wait. I pre-ordered it too and am waiting for it to come this November. I know you’ll love his books. I’ve found he started out with his cycle similar to Lord of the Rings but as his story progresses it just gets better and he steers away from “the typical”. I had to comment on this blog just because I love Paolini’s books so much. Enjoy! Have fun on your trips reading Eragon! Keep up the awesome job with the music too!

  48. I’ve heard a fair bit of good things about these books; maybe I’ll pick them up.
Have you read the Percy Jackson Series. THEY’RE AMAZING.

    Nathan Andrukonis

  49. Saaraa says:

I’m reading this too!!! It’s truly amazing. We have much in common Adam. Check out my blog at http://saaraajuddha.blogspot.com/ :)

  50. Joyce says:

Well, you DO have a talent to write! I have always marveled at your unique way with words, and I believe you could write a great book as well! And, keep it up with your music!

    Love,
    Joyce Ang. (:

  51. Dane says:

OH, I love these books! Finding out the last book comes out soon made me want to read them again, and this post reminded me of it XD

(btw, the only good thing about the movie is that it has Robert Carlyle in it.)

  52. Jess says:

Most fantasy books have a similar plot line. My dad and I have discussed this many times. My English teacher, too. And since LOTR is the most popular, people tend to compare to it. Seriously, though, consider reading Dragonflight. I’ll send you my school’s copy, just be done with it in a week ;) Lawl, just buy it yourself.
    Oh, and watch my tribute:

  53. ColdedHarp says:

I’ll try reading that book when I’m done with Rick Riordan’s series.

  54. Lyssa says:

I’ve been wanting to read these books, now you have convinced me that I absolutely have too!
I’ve always loved books full of magic and adventure. They stimulate the imagination and make you feel like anything is possible, like no challenge is too grand and no boundery can’t be pushed if you put your heart into it. They tought me to believe in magic and see it all around me, aswell as in me.
I started rereading the Harry Potters and I’m currently reading N.D. Wilson’s 100 Cupboards trilogy. Dandelion Fire (book 2) is blowing my mind, it’s just full of the unexpected, gives the right amount of chills and it’s brilliantly written. Actually someone on here had recommended it, that’s how I heard about it so, who ever you where : Thanks!
    oh, and Happy reading Adam=)

  55. Becca says:

Now, after many years, I might just start Eragon (need to convince my mom, though)!

    @ Alexandra,
I think that it was the author of Eragon that graduated at 15. I think I remember reading that somewhere. However, I’m not entirely sure, so someone can correct me on my correction if they want. :)

    @ Lyssa,
How dare you?!?! You told everyone about the ’100 Cupboards’ trilogy before I could! :0 And only one comment in front of me!Bummer. When did you first find out about these books?

Yes, everyone. I totally reccomend reading 100 Cupboards. the sencond book, Dandelion Fire, is the absolute best of the series. My sister and I both love it and have read it I don’t know how many times. These books are wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!

  56. ML says:

    Adam,

Sounds like SOMEbody should switch gears on careers and head into more of the I’m-that-guy-who-summarizes-novels-on-the-back-of-your-cover direction.

Don’t take my advice to heart though, that would be an utter devastation to all those youthful hearts who so love to hum along with your music.

    Something I’m guilty of myself…

But God blesses our ears with those ever catchy tunes and I thank you and Him for such a gift.

I’ll be seeing you. I always feel like Billie Holiday when I say that, except never nearly as grandesque as she tends to put it. Girl’s got class.

    You dear friend in Christ,
    Melissa

  57. Grace says:

We seriously just discussed this in literature class yesterday. My teachers opinion of the book(s) was this (paraphrased): For his age, Christopher Paolini did an amazing job. But, he didn’t make Eragon pay for his actions.

    Yep.

  58. Skye says:

I agree- the Inheritance Cycle is really quite something- I’ve read all
but the last, because that comes out next week, which is VERY exciting. Your friends do right by telling you to stay clear of the film; once you’ve read the books, well. It’s a bit pants.

  59. Juli says:

Those are my absolute favorite books! If you think Eragon is good, wait until you read Eldest, and Brisingr! And also, (just so you know), the fourth and final book comes out November 8. I’m so excited! I never saw the movie, but my friend did tell me that they totally ruined the storyline. But the books are amazing! Enjoy!

  60. Just another fan says:

I’ve seen the movie. Basically LOTR blown up around 27x. Very intriguing. You should see it. Have fun with you’re literary sandwich! <3
    Love,

  61. francesca says:

you are reading it??? I TOLD YOU NOT TO! and you enjoy it???? i ususally do cuz like, i am such an lotr fan too, but this book bored me silly! i didnt even bother watching ten minutes of the film! aaah!

  62. Saaraa says:

Hey Adam! I love reading your blog. I think we have a lot in common! Check out my blog at http://saaraajuddha.blogspot.com/ :)

  63. My friends have been recommending the series to me and I have been DYING to read it. Unfortunately, I have to finish reading Harry Potter and I gotta finish the first book of Warriors. I also want to read the Septimus Heap series, and I want to read The Kane Chronicles and The Heroes of Olympus or whatever. SO MANY BOOKS TO READ IN SO LITTLE TIME!!! I have been freaking out and I have no idea of how to organize my reading. *Sobs while munching on a Kit-Kat* XD

    GO READING!!!!!!

  64. Samantha C says:

I love Eragon to death. The cover art for the Inheritance Cycle is almost as good as the books themselves! Boy, I can’t wait until Inheritance comes out. My brother really wants it, and when he gets it I can read it! I would really like to read your fantasy story. Maybe you could post it chapter by chapter…?

    Your sister in Christ, Samantha

  65. Phoebe Paterno says:

I love Eragon and when I watched the movie and read the book.I couldn’t stop drawing and talking about dragons..
    :D GOD BLESS YOU!!!!

    -Phoebe Paterno (hoot!!)

  66. Jordan says:

Cool! I’m glad that you’re loving it! I too love the Inheritance Cycle – and the fourth book comes out this month (entitled, Inheritance)!!! HOOT HOOT!!! But a word of advice concerning Eragon – DON’T watch the movie, your friends are right!. It’s not worth it. The book is much better by far!
Epic fantasy is awesome! PURE awesome! I love it. And I love writing it. God knows! Maybe someday I’ll end up writing the book that you read on the airplane… ;)

  67. Mari says:

Well, it looks like I’m going to be heading to the library soon! :D I’ve been needing more books to read, anyways – I recently finished reading Harry Potter, so I’m trying to find some new books to obsess over, haha. :)

  68. Arty says:

i TRIED to read it once, got into first chapter and im like ????

  69. Arty says:

oh yeah, but Watership Down by Richard Adams is GREAT, got it from library.

  70. Winter says:

I must say, I really agree with you. I read Eragon last year, thus finishing all the books. Before I read the book, I saw the movie. Like your friends said, stay clear of it- It doesn’t include the major characters and makes everyone- even elves and dwarves- look like humans. Although the acting was great and all, I don’t really like the movie. The book is amazing though.

  71. Dreamer says:

I found myself speechless when I saw that, truly speechless. The Inheritance Cycle is one of my favorite stories and my biggest inspirations as I want to write a book of my own one day. Especially these days I am consumed by the story and I cannot wait to read the final book.
I love your writting style and I often visit the blog because I love to sink into that magical world of yours and mainly because I deeply admire the way you express yourself. You remind me of a nobleman from those times when everything look more like a fairy-tale. But back to the topic, I feel the same way like you do about these books, I also find similarity between Paolini`s work and Tolkien`s but I think that the world of Eragon offers so many and new breathtaking places and personages that it enchants the heart of every dreamer. I believe that one of the common traces are the characteristics of the elfs and the dwarfs although they are mythological creatures and their essence is already defined long ago. Both Paolini and Tolkien managed to create new details and new threads and they gave a new and individual look to those beautiful beings. The theme is also common- a small boy that is fully equiped with a good heart and endless courage is chosen by destiny. However those two stories as similar as they may seem, are different enough. One thing I know for sure- Paolini is a remarkable talent that knows how to create magic through words.

    Book 4 this friday!

  75. Laura says:

I remember having trouble reading that at first; I was young, and thus had a rather short attention span. I eventually set an afternoon to it and got most of the way through.

The sequels get a little confusing because of the point-of-view changes, but they’re still entertaining. I was a little annoyed they changed it from a trilogy to a quartet, but I guess there’s more suspense for us readers that way.

  76. mamp1 says:

cool series. eragon. You should really try Harry Potter. It’s got tradgedy, mystery, searches, mythology, legends, monsters, magic, boarding schools, giants, romance, danger, awesomeness, death, rivals, fighting, and the most horrible, evil dark creature that ever crossed the books, which Harry Potter, The Boy Who Lived, cannot possibly run away from. REALLY. It seems like it’s going against The Lord, and it would be, if you went off and started doing spells after you read the books, but the way J.K. Rowling portrays the good and the evil, It really isn’t. I’m eleven, and I think that my parents would reccomend this series too. I heart Hogwarts.

  77. Guinivere says:

  78. ashley says:

Oh wow! I’m so glad you’re reading these Adam! They are my favourite book series. Just wait until you read Eldest and Brisingr. Your mind will be blown. Far far away. The Inheritance Cycle is most definitely a literary sandwich of epic proportions. p.s i too agree about the movie. it’s terrible. do not watch it.

  79. Mikk says:

We admire Eragon and Blink 182. Surprises myself. Both Christians too. Yeheeyy! :))

  80. Wallace says:

I was just book shopping online last night for my daughter & almost bought this for her. Today, searching for concert tickets I find that you are reading it – cool! As my daughter is totally enchanted with your mind and music. She’s doing her school project on YOU. All of her iMovie videos are to your music (& are synced to go with each word) – If there is any way to meet you at your PA venue…we’ll be most appreciative for your time.
Thank you! I’m a chiropractor- feel free to email me.

  81. Lorelei AKA GalaxyGirl says:

WHEN ARE YOU WRITING YOUR BOOK ADAM? LOL I’ll buy at least six copies. ;D

WHO WISHES THEY HAD 35 DOLLARS SO THEY COULD BUY A SNEAKY OWL CITY CHRISTMAS SWEATER????????? I do….:(

  82. Lorelei AKA GalaxyGirl says:

    @Mari
Try The Hunger Games, it’s a fabulous series! And the movie comes out in March. ;D

  83. Noel says:

Oh my word. Way too many comments to scroll through. XD Anywho, a note to others about the graduating-high-school-at-15 thing. The author of Eragon graduated from high school at age 15 (I think he might’ve home-schooled…?), and started writing the first book of the Inheritance Cycle then. :)

Yes, Adam, take heed and DO NOT WATCH THE MOVIE. I could’ve cried at how untrue to the book it was. Also, it was just a bad movie in itself. :P

  84. Ariel says:

I literally just watched the movie Wednesday night! Haha, you have impeccable timing! Bless you love!

    :)

  85. KatieA says:

I, too, discovered Eragon while flying on a long trip. I had just gotten to Frankfurt, Germany, from San Francisco, CA, and had finished all of my reading material (with a 14 hour flight ahead of me; my final destination was in India). I found Eragon and Eldest in a bookstore. It was instant love! I’m begging my friend to let me borrow her copy of the third book; I haven’t found it anywhere else yet.

Yup, don’t watch the movie. I’ve seen it, and next to the book, it’s awful, although it might be okay if you’d never read the book.

And you could too write a novel! Actually, November is National Novel Writing Month! http://www.nanowrimo.org << check it out! I'm proof that an introvert can do it without going crazy. XD It'd be great if you could join us some year! :D

  86. Phantom says:

I would have never guessed you hadn’t read Eragon before! I assumed you had, after I found out about your love for The Lord of the Rings. It’s a great series, the Inheritance Cycle is. I can’t wait for the last book, Inheritance when it comes out on the 8th. Only a few days! Hope you continue to enjoy the books, they are one of my favorites, and I get a lot of my writing inspiration from them.

    Dear Adam,
I am 13 years old and it is my biggest dream to met you. In a world with music being R rated your music is fantastic with out even being PG13 I know you probably won’t read this comment. With your thousands of other fans, but it was worth a try.
    Your fan,
    Anna

  88. Abby says:

The Inheritance Cycle is amazing!!! I can hardly wait to read the next one coming out this month! Excellent taste you have there, sir.

  89. Kay says:

Adam, read Hunger Games and comment on it pretty please!!!! :)

  90. Madison says:

I have been hearing a lot of good reviews on this book, so I’m thinking of starting it soon!

  91. ADAM BRILLIANT YOUNG, YOU JUST MADE ME HYPER AND ALMOST SCREAM LIKE A GIRL (though I did kind of hop around the room pounding my fists on the floor, very unbecoming). As if Inheritance could not have more hype. I was reading it’s fanfiction then find out Book 4 is finally coming out, follow the countdown for days and then see THIS!!!! I really hope we can meet one day.
Okay, you’re reading Inheritance, I’ll stop by and read Lord of The Rings sometime then.

  92. Jasmine says:

Adam, I ended the book :)
It’s amazing, now It’s downloading the movie :P
Eldest is the next what I get Monday xD
My teacher said that he will try to find that book :D
I hope you will end it and read all the books.
    -Jasmii.

  93. Sara says:

The Inheritance Cycle is amazing! It will not disappoint and you will love Eldest and Brisingr too. I can’t wait for the fourth book. :)

  94. Kaze says:

Adam, I’m certain that YOU have an amazing writing talent as well. Every time you write I blog, I can see it in you. I seriously want you to write a novel or something. I’d be the first to buy. xD

  95. Lorelei AKA GalaxyGirl says:

Adam, I noticed your tweet the other day…something about coughing up blood?! I hope you’re well. Praying for you. <3

  96. a2159262 says:

I’ve said that least 2159262 times. The problem this like that is they are just too compilcated for the average bird, if you know what I mean

  97. Laurie says:

So funny – I read Eldest when I was on a 26-hr train ride from Beijing to Hong Kong.
    It’s an Asian thing. :-)

  98. xgalaxy says:

I’ll admit I didn’t like Eragon when I read it (Eragon just wasn’t that sympathetic of a character to me; he was kind of mean O_o) BUT parts of it were pretty cool. Ever since I was little I’ve always wanted to hatch a dragon egg! That would be so awesome.

I liked Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke, but I’m probably the only one. At any rate, fantasy is a great genre. Happy reading :)

  99. Katlyn says:

I started to reread the first book (because I forgot what happened in it after I dropped the second book) just about three weeks ago. It’s one of my favourite series. :D I’m on the second book, and can’t wait to figure out what happens…

I’ve watched the movie before (a while ago…) and I think that it’s definitely right for you to stay away from it. It’s nothing like the book, sadly.
I really hope you enjoy the book! :)

Also, I hope get well soon! I’ll pray for you, and believe that many others will too.

    -Katlyn

  100. Charlotte Anne says:

I’ve saw it just this day at the bookstore! Too sad, it’s too heavy for my allowance.

  101. Laurianna says:

I always wanted to read that book! But I never got around to it. I’m very happy to know that my favortie artist of all time has the same interest in reading style as I do. :3
But now I have to read it! LOL
    Enjoy!
    ~Laurianna

  102. Ash says:

I read your blog and love it and have never commented until now. Books you see are one of my passions and I feel I must share about this one.

While I have indeed read Eragon, Eldest, and Brisingr, and enjoyed the story and writing style very much, I am not sure I will continue my travels into the last book. Without giving the plot of the books away, I felt there was a strong anti-monotheistic religious undertone (seemingly anti-Christian, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say totally so or that it was atheistic in nature).Paolini has said in interviews he will not discuss his religious views, though he cites Philip Pullman, a known atheist, as an influence in his work. A quote from Brisingr “Perhaps no one religion contains all of the truth of the world. Perhaps every religion contains fragments of the truth, and it is our responsibility to identify those fragments and piece them together.”

As a Christian, I believe that when you read anything, for pleasure or learning, that you should do so with your Christ filter firmly in place–meaning you take all that you read and compare it to the truths that God has given you in His word. I would encourage you that as you enjoy the story, you measure everything you read by the standard that is Christ our Lord. For my heart and my journey I want to make sure I see everything with a God led discerning heart and mind, as I am sure you do as well.

  103. Anna says:

When I first heard your lyrics for songs it reminded me of my poems – and I thought you probably liked artistic language and enjoyed reading. I used to have no friends when I was younger so I always read. Now in college I have little time to enjoy books… but this post reminded me of how much a good read can relax the mind…
and to Ash… I agree Paolini has atheistic beliefs, or at least agnostic, but regardless it’s not wrong to just read literature merely for enjoyment. He’s a good writer, his language and vocabulary… the scenes he paints with his words; it all captures you and consumes you. At least it did me. Can I blame a day or two spent solely on Paolini’s books? haha.
The good news is that I can read the bible even if I don’t have time to ‘escape’ literature. But in my free time I will be getting through a couple books here before the end of this year.

  104. Anna says:

oh and Paolini was homeschooled and finished his high school early for those who are wondering. He started the series when he was 16 I believe. I always had a sort of attraction towards his books because I was homeschool and just graduated a year early myself.

  105. Sarah says:

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH MORE NOW.<3

  106. Bookishmuch says:

Inheritance is waaaaaay more like Star Wars than Lord of the Rings.

  107. Hannah says:

If you like fantasy, esp. Lord of the Rings, might I suggest Patrick Rothfuss Name of the Wind. It is one of my favorite books. EVER. It’s a rather long trilogy as well…

  108. Amaia says:

I myself have never been able to get into Eragon, however, if fantasy is your thing I’d recommend The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan.

  109. starssingpretty says:

Oh wow!!!!!!! Eragon and Eldest and Brisingr and Inheritance are my FAVORITE BOOKS IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!! My favorite artist is reading my favorite author’s books!! It is truly a literary sandwich of epic porpotions!
    I have a epic desire….
can you PLEASE write a ode to Eragon? I think I might just blow up full of happiness if you do! THANKS A BAZILLION!!! (if you write it) :)

  110. Savannah says:

If you like the epic fantasy genre… You should totally check out The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. I am continually amazed at the original writing it has… and yes, as there are similarities between series’ involving magic and good vs. evil, I don’t feel it mimics LotR or anything of the like to an acknowledgeable point.

  111. Danyon says:

I love this book series. Im reading the final book now.

  112. Elizabeth Mohn says:

The first Eragon book always bored me for some reason but I never was able to put it down.. :) Oh and I didn’t see the similarities in The Lord of the Rings until you pointed it out. And something equally as awesome my sisters name after Princess Arwen.. :D She looks a lot like the one in the movie too..

  113. Minami says:

Please tell me you aren’t serious about enjoying Eragon. Or anything even remotely Christopher Paolini-related. He is such a pretentious fuck.

  114. AdamYoungIsAwesome says:

I’m currently reading it, too! I think it’s really interesting and I really hate putting it down. I think you have a really good taste in books.

    Lots of love,
    Me

  115. Roax206 says:

this is probably a bit late but the endings between the eragon book and the eragon movie are really different.
ps: anyone who has played Skyrim or Oblivion should find it funny that in one of the eragon books it has talos as a type of cactus.

  116. Emannxx says:

OMG! I’m also reading Eragon! What a coincidence!

    It’s amazing :)

  117. Oh, Adam. :’)
I love this series, though I’ve only read the first book. I suppose now you’ve read that Brom dies. It was shocking.
I’m glad that you can inspire the world with your strong faith in God. That is one thing I long for in the next years collapsing in on me like a waterfall. :)
Farewell. I hope you hear more from me soon.

  118. Dear Adam,
I’m asking you something very important to me. In fact, I’m pretty much begging. Seeing as you’re a fan of the fantasy nature, I was wondering-hoping- praying- that it would be possible for you to read my novel.
It is fantasy, and in fact, I have a character who is somewhat inspired by your quiet thoughtfulness and your unwavering kindness.
I’m hoping that this won’t simply be another comment passed over by your eyes. Please see this, Adam. As a fan, and as a dire 14 year old girl, please God, please Adam, read my novel.
    God bless you, Coryn

  119. Grayson says:

Hah! I read Eragon awhile back and am now reading the 3rd (The second one is semi boring) and I am completely jealous of Christopher and his abilities!

  120. Evan says:

Paolini I find rather enigmatic. His descriptive paragraphs are borderline poetry, sometimes. His writing greatly improves throughout the series. But Eragon is one of my least favourite characters ever. I could write a lecture on my likes and dislikes about Eragon. But I won’t. I don’t like it, but I have to give Paolini credit for actually publishing, which is something I haven’t done.

  121. Caera says:

I love the Inheritance Cycle. I’ve met Paolini twice and he’s really cool. I hope he writes more books about Eragon and Co. in the future. :)

  122. Taylor says:

I love this book! I started reading it is sixth grade and am still waiting to g et the fourth book. I wonder if I will still remember the characters.

  123. theowllover says:

wow. as i read older blogs, i think one thing: wow, im not alone as a nerd here in this world…. other people like this series too, and if Adam Young likes it, that makes my day. no i didnt start to read this after i saw your blog, but i took a reading fluency test on it today and i finished reading it a week ago. started the seccond book… its hard to finish b-cuz my room is like a really messy and disorganized library.LOL books like this are awesome. (but my friends think i a bookworm and a little bit geeky…)
from your 11 year old wannabe bff,
    ~theowllover
P.S. i wont put my name on the web unless im emailing.. so yeah sorry you dont have the pleasure of meeting me, it (like i say on your more recent blogs) would be a definite honor of meeting you.

  124. Jacob says:

I’m a big fan of the Inheritance cycle and I Just finished the last book.
    best book!

  125. Wow! I’m reading this too! Imagine my face when I saw it in your page… it is really good… and, someone else imagined Eragon and Murtagh as Link and Ike (The Legend of Zelda and Fire Emblem)?

  126. theowlgirl says:

    Adam,
I have that book i just haven’t gotten around to reading it it used to be my sisters (the one who introduced me to owlcity) im currently on Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince its epic

  127. QT says:

Finally! Eragon is awesome, the movie dose not do it justice. but most movies for books don’t… Have you read the last book yet? Did anyone else think there was so much that wasn’t touched? I did. It feels like the story isn’t finished yet.

  128. Jacob Swift someone's cousin;) says:

Christopher Paolini should really write another one.
    to bad…… :(

  129. So…this is an old post of yours, but it’s about a fantasy book.

I actually just finished writing a fantasy book myself. One of the main characters has flaming red hair, a yellow raincoat, white rain boots, a flying magical umbrella that shoots fire.

    Her name is Natalie Bliss.

So if you’re ever interested in reading a novel from one of your longtime fans…you should read The Phoenix Guardian. :D Just sayin’.

  130. Charlotte A (@charky_em) says:

    Assuming you’ve finished by now,

I would recommend that you read the Earthsea books by Ursula Le Guin, and then the 20+ books that are the Dragonriders of Pern series. They’re better than and more original than Inheritance -I’m pretty sure that between them they inspired every single part of the Inheritance cycle from dragon telepathy to languages of truth- and I’m sure you would really enjoy them… I’m sure they would provide you with enough bedtime reading to last you a very long time :P
