I’ll Follow You

It was chilly outside but not the kind that increases with the darkness until you’re so cold that you forget who you’re with or where you’re walking. It was sweatshirt weather; the trick was to keep moving and as far as I was concerned, as long as there was sidewalk ahead, I could’ve kept walking forever. Given the chance, I probably would’ve, but I had a 6AM flight to catch the next morning and the night just didn’t seem long enough.

I spotted her perched on a sidewalk bench under a streetlight and away we strolled.

Melbourne was still a new place to me, bursting with so may intricacies and marvels that my wide eyes undoubtedly labeled me TOURIST to all observant bystanders. But I didn’t mind; the shy smile on my face gave me away. A steady current of city nightlife carried us down several traffic-choked veins before dumping us out onto a winding riverside footpath with front row seats to a shimmering skyline.

It was dazzling, one of those rare occasions in life you wish you could bottle up and refrigerate for later to relive its wonder. The Yarra River pulled fancy dining boats draped in twinkle lights downstream at a lazy pace as hushed laughter and the clinking of crystal spilled out from somewhere onboard. We sat by the water and drank in the evening. A few brave seagulls chose to spend their time on the sidewalk eyeing our ice cream versus hovering over the food court stealing trash or whatever it is they do. Everything in front of my eyes appeared 20% clearer, the night was deep, the world looked brighter than I’d remembered it a few hours before, the dull city ambience hummed clean and pure in my ears and I had to remind myself to keep breathing because it was all too breathtaking. There are moments in life when you find yourself wishing you were somewhere else (for whatever reason, good or bad), but on this night, there was nowhere else on the planet I would’ve rather been. It was flawless. So we kept walking.

Tall stone pillars lined our side of the river and burst big plumes of fire up into the sky on the hour. Over thirty feet away, I could feel the flames warm on my face and it felt good in the brisk night air. I’m a Minnesota boy and she was an Australian girl but we both felt the cold burn in our fingers so we moved on and continued walking. The ornate hotel fountain we found was glorious. How do they get water to jump across the room from one spot to another in perfect streams of green and blue? We explored a treelined avenue washed in soft lavender, a network of garden paths under a heavy scent of flowers — everything seemed to twinkle and sparkle in the low light and it was all so captivating.

I liked the way we both knew the same words but said them so differently. There’s something quite musical about Australian accents, I’ve always thought so.

We slowly made our way back across the bridge, back through the city the way we came, and suddenly we were back where we started, saying shy goodbyes although it felt like we’d only just said hello. And then just like that, she was gone.

In the elevator on the way back up to my room I remember taking a deep breath and thinking, “Wow… I’m never going to forget this night.”

i read this and after i finished reading it i found my self saying adam adam to myself. i love how you describe everything in the most beautifully romantic way. i wish i could be your best friend and know everything about you. all your inside jokes and all your feelings. i long to know what your life is like everyday. i have an older brother but he is only 1 year older than me. if i could have an older brother that is quite a bit older than me and mature i would want him to be just like you! you are a great example to everyone around you! you love jesus with your heart soul and mind and always will. when i get married i want my husband to be a lot like you. :) nobody is perfect but you are as close to perfect as i can imagine. dont get me wrong i love jesus more than anything on earth he is my saving grace he is perfect. i dont want anyone or anything to be more important to me than he is. i just want to let you know that you mean a lot to me and i love you although i dont know you. <3 thanks again -your sister in christ :]

  24. Elisabeth says:

Awwwwww this is too cute! I must admit, I am jealous of this Australian girl. Partly because she’s Australian (therefore, automatically quite terrific in my book), but mostly because she got to spend time with you. I’m glad you had such a wonderful evening with her, though. =)

    God bless! <3

  33. Jenna says:

Beautiful, as always…just like everything else about you. I’m so happy for you, and I wish you the best always.

  34. Pam M. says:

Wow. I so enjoy your reading your blog posts, Adam. Wherever you happen to be, your words take me right along with you. As I was reading, my dog and my neighbor’s equally as crazy dog decided to go at, barking their heads off. Oddly enought, the sound of them did not interfere nor did it distract me from the lovely word picture you painted. I could hear the glasses clinking, the silverware against the dishes and the voices of the folks on the riverboat as they dined; I could see the lights, the flames and the fountain’s colors, feel the night air, taste the ice cream and smell the flowers…all from my tiny kitchen in NJ. Thanks, Adam!

  35. Feathers says:

I had a day like this once… and I just know I’ll see him again.
I hope you get to meet some one great too!

Oh and bless up for you both :) XOXO

  37. M says:

It’s funny, you thinking “I’m never going to forget this night.” Once she got back, she probably thought the exact same thing. I know I would. :-)

  38. Pookie says:

What a phenomenal narrative of a breath-taking night! Brilliantly written my friend

  44. mb says:

once again….shhhhay-what? i only read this blog b/c i’m monitoring what my ‘youngin’ is into…and you never make sense…
Adam, keep in mind that you have MANY teenage girls who have crushes on you…You need to point them to Christ (Whom you claim in some posts). Not these silly “romantic” thoughts…
Thanks!! Stay STRONG in THE LORD!

  45. @BruhUrie says:

I wish I had someone who would always say such beautiful words to me. Unfortunately, not all the people in this world are like you. You are an exception, adam. Almost all the guys out there only think about sex and having fun. They see the girls as an object, as something disposable. You, otherwise, have got this admiration for girls. This desire of making ‘em happy. You LOVE the girls. That’s one of the things I most like in you: Your capacity of seeing us (girls) as human beings just like you, and not useless objects. I still think you need to find someone who truly deserves you, and I hope you find it soon.

About the entry, it is absolutely gorgeous! I just love your descriptive way of writing. I like your precision and the way you put all the feelings inside of you into words. Do ya have any idea of how HARD it is? You are so talented, adam. I’m so glad I had the opportunity of knowing a bit more about your music, life, texts, pics and other stuff. It is a honor for me to ‘know’ such a blessed artist like you. Thank God for putting Owl City in my life!

I really wish you come to Brazil one day. Maybe we’ll meet and eat some ice cream together. Or Oreos with milk, if ya prefer. And we’re gonna do it while watching the waves crashing against the stones in the amazing Rio beaches. PLEASE, think about it. LOL Oh! And for dinner we could have pizza (I know you won’t resist: Oreos, Ice cream, ocean, pizza).

I already consider you as one of my best friends. I’m just too shy to meet new people and make new friends. And you’ve helped me so much that I can’t even catch words to make you understand how thankful I am. So yeah, sorry for the speech. LOL

  46. gerbilove says:

i must listen to death cab for cutie. this post is chock-full of references.
:) you always make me smile. thank you, adam!!!!

  47. mmeee says:

This took my breath away. I had no idea Melbourne was so romantic, but I guess I’ve never really gone walking there before. It’s funny you should say that about Australian accents, because I think American accents sound sort of musical.

I found myself thinking, “Wow… I’m never going to forget this post.”

I’d really appreciate it if you’d check out my blog: http://orangeintheovercast.blogspot.com/

    Hugs,
    Madd :)

  48. Hopeless dreamer says:

There goes my future husband </3 :P

  49. mamp1 says:

Wow. I love Australia. When I was a little kid me and my best friend were crazy about the crocodile hunter. And You know what? You’re very nice.

  50. Amy says:

beautiful. ur stories make me smile. =)

  51. Dani says:

This makes me so happy. It makes me even happier that it happened in my own city :)

  52. birdie says:

Australia loves you too Adam! <3

  53. Laura says:

Glad to hear you’re enjoying yourself. Sadly, despite living in Australia, I’ve never actually been to Melbourne, so I can’t really relate to you on this one. But honestly, I think I’d prefer where you live to where I live; quiet, and with snow in the winter.

  54. Bronwyn says:

Another beautiful story. And how romantic! Sometimes I wish I was someone else. Someone who could have such romantic scenes in life. But then I realise that it will never happen, just because I would definitely not be able to even say hello to someone I like. So such scenes won’t happen in my life…
Everyday I keep on trying to change that part of my character, so I would become just a little more extrovert, but it never works out. So at the end of each day, when I lay in my bed, I start dreaming of a life where I’m a totally different person.
But then the next day I wake up, just being myself. And the routine starts again. It’s quite disappointing, but I keep on living, trying and dreaming.

Anyway, the story is beautiful! Absolutely beautiful!

  55. Ann (NOT Ann Marie) says:

Ummm… Ada and Ann Marie broke it off over a year ago so how does she come into anything? He so needs to move on but as nice as it is that he’s in love with a fellow Aussie, Taylor Swift and Adam would suit being together so well! It’s just a matter of bad timing; when he finally figures out she has a crush on him, she’s dating Jake Gyllenhaal and then she breaks up with him, doesn’t want to date for a while so you can understand why she doesn’t reply to his adorable proclamations of love!
If he would just show up at one of her concerts and acted like his adorable self they would so be together!

    Let’s do the math:
Taylor likes Adam’s music, vice versa
Taylor wants to live in Minnesota, Adam lives in Minnesota
They have had crushes on each other
They both came from small towns
Taylor wants someone who’s a dreamer like her… Adam = dreamer
Adam has a thing for cute blondes…
Adam is taller than Taylor, that’s a plus.

  56. Ann (NOT Ann Marie) says:

oops! Adam* hehe typo on the first sentence, how embarassing!

  57. Elina says:

This made me smile ear to ear, cause within a year, this could be me in Adam’s shoes walking those same streets of Melbourne towards…. well, who knows?

  58. Nic says:

I really like the way Adam describes anything. Reading this made me smile and want to visit Australia. XD

  59. Pam M. says:

I’m sorry. I do not wish to start a blog brawl on this beautiful site of Adam’s.

But I must speak up because I take issue with someone’s comment, and I’d like to address it as kindly & nicely as possible.

To mb: sorry, Mom, but while we’re all entitled to our opinions, I think you’re offbase with your comment.

People have blogs for many reasons: to post their inmost thoughts, dreams, ideas, opinions; to encourage others, to vent about something, to bring attention to a worthy cause. Some post recipes or lessons, others poems or pictures, stories or songs. Some just write about their day.

Adam is an artist with an obvious God given gift and talent. He paints beautiful, humorous and colorful word pictures in his songs and on his blog. There is a sweet innocence to them, and this recent post resonates this as well. There is nothing silly about his sharing his romantic thoughts and experiences. I’d like for my daughter, who reads Adam’s blog, to know that not all men are after one thing and only look upon females as ‘hotties’ and as their latest conquest, that a man with a gentle soul like Adam’s is out there and worth seeking out and finding.

God is the Creator of love, romance and yes, I’m going to say it…Sex. Grab your Bible and read through Song of Songs. Talk about silly, romantic thoughts. It’s chock full of them.

I love reading Adam’s blog, not so much to see what my daughter is into, but for my own enjoyment. He’s on my own blog roll. And funny…I’ve read some comments from readers here who protest that Adam speaks too much of God. We all see things from a different perspective at times, yes? :)

  60. That_Person_Over_There says:

D’aw, cool story bro. And I actually mean that ^^

  61. nelly says:

I wish I was there, walking with you, but in New York, ’cause that’s were I live. Not in Australia. Even though I really would like to go there. So yeah.
But I’m glad you had a magicial night.
    God Bless

  66. Lupe says:

It sounded like you had a wonderful time with her! The way you explained it made me feel like I was there with you and saw everything that you did. It all sounded so beautiful.
And you’ll never forget her, or that night.
I love the way you always give such detail into everything that you hear, see and smell every time that you type a blog entry. I really love the fact that you’re willing to share your magical nights with your fans so we can hear what fun you’ve had.
Thank you!! This was so wonderful! I love it when you write entry’s like this one!

PS. I found out that your numerology number is a nine! I’m an eleven, also my birthdays tomorrow (I wanted to share that with you!) Well love you, and thank you for everything you do!

  67. Marizona says:

Adam, I was relaxing in a coffeshop earlier, reading The Silver Chair. I happened to glance up and see a man, huddled over a book, who was slightly frazzled, dark-haired and wearing a navy sweater. For a moment I thought you’d departed from the great Outback (home the lovely girls with their melodic accents) to astonish the wits out of one of your biggest aficionados. But then he turned around, and I was largely disappointed to find that he wasn’t you. Perhaps you could come by my little town to scare the living daylights out of me, anyway…
I won’t call myself your “biggest fan”, but I’d say I’m pretty close. Thanks for inspiring me with your breathtaking blog, and especially for posting Christian things.
Continue running the good race (in a totally boss way!)
    -Marizona

  68. mmeee says:

  72. Laura says:

  73. Stephanie J. says:

    Adam,

I am fifteen years old and have never so much as held hands with a guy. You give me hope that there are good Christian men out there, men who know how to respect a girl, any girl, and will treasure the one who becomes their wife. Thank you for that hope.

    -Stephanie J.

  74. IAmTired says:

Awesome writing, like always. Nothing like a summer romance, huh? Hope you’re having a good time in the land down under.

  75. Eneria says:

How I wish I would be that girl someday!
    欢迎来中国!
    Welcome to China.

  76. Faith says:

    I like you… Just sayin. K, bye! ;)

  77. ML says:

    Adam,

I just love the way your da-da dun da daa-a-as drift in and out of my ears like the humming whistle of a gust of wind. Your gift from God will never falter with such love for Christ. An admirable trait indeed.

    Your distant friend,
    Melissa

  78. Owl says:

Musical accents, Hey? :)You give me hope that someone else like you is out there, adam. A hope that will surely be dashed a thousand times. I’m being very pessimistic, but you give me hope, You give me optimism, You have shaped my way of life . But still, You give me hope that someone just as shy and romantic and beautiful as you is out there.

  79. Meagan says:

Oh this post made me incredible homesick for gorgeous Melbourne and longing even more for a romantic walk through its dazzling streets.

  80. Olianna says:

oh adam this so seriously beautiful <3
i love it…it's just like after drinking a hot chocolate milk in the chill winter :) is kind of a sweet content…warm me so much :)
    i love you adam :)

  81. xgalaxy says:

I wish I could write that beautifully. The imagery was flawless to the point where it was as though I could see the lights of the boats sparkling over the water and feel the cool evening breeze…amazing work :) And now I want some ice cream!

You always write about how shy you are, yet to me you have so much courage. In your situation, I would’ve been too scared to even talk to her, but you weren’t, and that’s strength. I don’t attend concerts normally because it’s really loud and there are so many people it just overwhelms me, yet you’re able to get in front of an enormous audience and just pour your heart out to them. I hope I can become like that someday.

You should show this to the girl you’re writing about :D it’s so sweet and kind. She’d love it!

  82. Steph says:

Really beautiful. When I read the sentence “The Yarra River pulled fancy dining boats draped in twinkle lights downstream at a lazy pace as hushed laughter and the clinking of crystal spilled out from somewhere onboard. ” I got chills. I love the way you select words to describe things, like- you enhance real life without making it unrealistic. It’s dreamy :)

  83. DavidO says:

I wish I could be that girl! I’m a guy though so that would be weird.

  84. Mary Beth says:

This post was lovely, as always. Australia seems amazing. I’d love to visit one day. I’m glad you two had fun! :)

  85. fofo says:

It’s so sad that nights like this night should end.
Plus you seem like you’re on a different planet, you have lavenders and smiling people, while we have blood and people killing each other.

Thank you for sending a smile to a girl sitting miles away from where you are.

  86. First I listened to ‘enchanted’. then I listened to ‘vanilla twilight’. just now I finished reading this post. you sing, write songs, make music, are incredibly romantic and have an impeccable sense of poetry. is there something you can’t do? :O :O

PS- I’m crushing on you now. :|

  87. Boink says:

I am trying my best to bring up my boys to become kind, generous gentlemen who will truly know how to treat girls with dignity & respect. It’s wonderful to know that though there are so few artists like you who they can look up to these days, you still do exist!

Love your music & your blogs, & the beautiful poetry I continue to find in them!

Looking forward to catching you in Manila! :-) :-) :-)

  88. Amerlina says:

why don’t you have any long-term relation with a girl?!
this has been always a question for me!

  89. Kellie says:

Heh. I’ve experienced nights like that. They’re fantasies brought to reality, and I wish they lasted longer….

I’m glad you had such a wonderful time! :)

    – Kellie

  90. Lorelei AKA GalaxyGirl says:

WOW!!!!!!! I love this!!! I love you!!! This is awesome!!! So dreamy!!! I’m a little jealous!!! Don’t you just love exclamation points??!!!!!!!!
Hey…wait a sec…is this the girl (@diamondveinz) you were flirting with on Twitter???!!! Wouldn’t that be something?! She has a great blog BTW, and is very beautiful!
I sent you a letter this Monday! Hopefully you find it on your next tour break! Have fun in foreign lands!

You always have the most beautiful love scenes. Did this actually happen?? Lucky girl!

  95. Samantha says:

Last night I got terribly sick.
Between prayers, all I could think about was your beautiful music. I sang In Christ Alone inside my head during the whole sleepless night.
My laptop screen is making my headache even worse, but I wanted you to know (if you even read this) that everything you do inspires me. Your music is so comforting. Thanks for everything, Mr.Young!

I’m so glad you had such a magical night with her! If she was able to make you feel like that, Adam, don’t let her get away. People like that are one of a kind. I so wish I could experience the things that you do, you always have such amazing dreams and events happen to you. I’ve been praying for God to guide you and help you, and may He guide you in the right direction with both her and your life in general. Have a great time on your tour, and I will continue to pray for you and keep you in my thoughts.
    Love,
    Madeline
P.S. Your music is perfect to listen to on a 13 hour drive from Georgia back to Wisconsin. It gave me strength when I thought I could not endure any more driving and being contained in a small space with my family. I can appreciate ATBAB even more now because I’ve been able to dissect every rhythm, lyric, and musical phrase. :) Thanks!

A film like this couldn’t possibly be done years ago, and technology coupled with an artistic team’s imagination and reference from Thor’s source material, made the big battle sequences interesting.
