New Zealand and Australia

My airplane neck pillow and I are fully prepared to start functioning. Excuse me while I listen to Norma Jean and The Chariot for the next fourteen hours in the sky.

I hope a furious kangaroo runs out onto the fairway while I’m playing nine holes of golf and challenges me to a fight of bare fists.

I’d own that silly little plant-eating marsupial like a boss.

We’ll be seeing ya!

Why, I love airplane neck pillows. They make my neck comfy.

I hope a hyperactive koala comes up to you in the wilderness while you’re taking spectacular photos and challenges you to a thumb war.
The other animals would look on in jealousy of the magic of opposable thumbs.

  32. Jess says:

HAHAHAHA Australia. Have fun there! I hope you don’t forget to blog for a long time, like in the LAST tour (O,o). Mentally scarred owl: the fireflies said farewell. Lol well have fun, and good luck with that kangaroo! (And watch out for thumbnail deadly jellyfish…(O,o) MENATLLY SCARRED OWL. Dennis is watching you.

  33. KatieA says:

14 hours, hmm? While I have taken longer flights than that, I would like to forget those experiences, particularly since I cannot, no matter how hard I try, sleep on planes. (I was awake more than 48 hours – yeah.) I hope you can sleep though, if for no other reason than 14 hours is a very long time to think/read/watch-a-movie/otherwise-occupy-yourself-while-remaining-seated. Unless you want to play with hotwheels cars in the isles, a rather fun thing to do on an airplane, but one that the flight attendants generally frown on. *sigh* No one appreciates hotwheels anymore.

See if you can get someone to film that fight. I wanna see it. Oh, and don’t hurt him too bad, you could get arrested, I think.

    Have fun!

    - Katie

  34. laurianna says:

Have fun! I wish i could see you on concert again! someday, I nknow it! And I alwas wanted to go to Austraila!! But i can’t, agin, someday. Have fun though! See ya soon!

  35. sylvia says:

aww, i wish I could be at one of your shows, but not this time. I hope you have such a great time here that your tour loads more – and come to perth and adelaide :P

  36. Harriet says:

Basically, kangaroos are fun. I like it when they hang out in the middle of the road and I die of fright. They also taste amazing (but not off the road side, of course). …Anyway, I hope you lads and lasses will get to do some touristy things while here. G’day!? (I can’t think of a quintessentially/stereotypically australian goodbye)

  37. Estefania de Leon says:

    HAVE AN AWESOME TIME! :)
Hope everything goes swell overseas and I bet everyone will love you.
    Have a safe trip! :)

  38. Liz :) says:

    Hey Adam,
Australia is definitely beautiful, and the people are friendly too. I had the amazing opportunity to go and stay there for 8 1/2 months about ten years ago and the memories are fond. I did not have a chance to hop over to New Zealand but I am sure it is just as gorgeous. I wish you safe travels, pleasant dreams, and many opportunities to shine the light of Christ. If you get a moment, check out the photography of Ken Duncan(if you haven’t already), it is truly stunning. For kicks and giggles, try reading the poem “The Man From Snowy River” with your best Aussie accent. If nothing else, it will make the time go by! You have my prayers.

    Matthew 5:14-16

  39. Mari says:

    You are a dork.

Have a safe trip, and have fun in New Zealand and Australia. :)

  40. Dellie says:

I’m crying right now. I lived a year in New Zealand. It was the best year of my life. I can’t explain how much I enjoyed being there. I wish I could go back there so badly that I’m saving every single penny.
New Zealand is just… Fantastic.. Their love for nature, the birds (you must go to a reserve to see Kiwis), plants (silver fern are beautiful). The sports -extreme sports, not just rugby. I don’t know if you are a fan of adrenaline, but you should jump from the sky tower in Auckland, or do a bungy jump, and if you have the chance, skydiving in Queestown, the view is amazing. The people there, they are so nice! I’m sure lots of them would be perfectly happy to make a pavlova for you, or invite you to a marae (Maori culture is so interesting!). I’m sure you would love to go for a walk on the beautiful and quiet beaches over there, no matter where you are, you will always be close to the ocean.
God, I could spend a year talking about that gorgeous country! I miss that place so much! I hope you enjoy your stay there as much as I did!
Best wishes, enjoy and have fun!

  41. Sparrowfell says:

You know kangaroos are like 10 feet tall, right? Not so “silly little” after all.

  42. Madeline says:

    Ok… You’re adorable… (please don’t take that weirdly…)
God has gifted you, Adam! Keep following His will and He will bless you!

  45. Pixi says:

Ah, how I would love to live near Brisbane or Sydney or Melbourne. Alas, I am from the middle of nowhere, which is near nowhere, and hence I go nowhere.

You will be uploading live footage, shan’t you Adam?

and may I suggest NOT taking on a kangaroo with bare fists. 223s work MUCH better.

  46. Nathalia says:

  49. Mey says:

Yes!!!If I could live in any country in the world I would move to Austalia in a heart beat.I totally wish I could go right now and see the two greatest things in this world:Owl City and Australia. Oh and you show that nutty kangaroo;crazy sasquatch got nothing on you(but you have to pity the poor fellas,I doubt they can be picky about their shoes).Hope you have a safe flight and a great time in the amazing Australia and New Zealand!!

  50. Char says:

Your in-flight music choice = commendable.

    See you Friday.

  51. young@heart says:

Hi Adam! Hope you have a safe flight. I know you will enjoy yourself in Australia and New Zealand as much as the fans will enjoy seeing you!
The first blog of yours I ever read was “The Good Fight”. This blog put a knot in my stomach as I was blown away by your want to make the Lord proud, to spread his word, to be sure that whatever you did was in his name. You encouraged people to live “holy lives”, and to hold steadfast to their faith. What a beautiful disciple you are! You read your bible and I think it is wonderful that you carry it everywhere you go. Nothing is more powerful than the word of God.
I have to admit I do not always read the bible as often as I should. As Christians, we can learn from and inspire one another. Just as that fan caused you to think about doing what you do for Christ; you have inspired myself and others to read His word more faithfully.
I gave copies of “The Good Fight” to family and others that I know. My mother always listens nicely as I tell her Adam wrote this, or Adam said that.:) They think it’s nice, but they are not feeling you like I do or as excited as I thought they would be. So, I shut up and have been keeping you to myself.
I tried to find love before; kind of gave that up, and thought if God wanted someone out there for me, I would leave it to Him, or if He wanted me to stay single, then so be it. Stumbling upon you, I long to have a partner who loves Christ with all of his being, who is kind, humble, compassionate, funny.
I so admire your openness about your faith. Anytime anyone asks you about it; there is no hesitation. You shout it from the highest rooftop! Alot of artists have given praises to the Lord, but their videos/music or lifestyle do not reflect that.
There are people who disappoint me in this world by their attitude; the way they treat others, but Adam you do not disappoint at all. You are bright and beautiful; a shining star in a world full of sex, violence, immorality, hate. You are an inspiration to shy people, christians; old and young. You make me want to be a better Christian, person, woman.
    To be continued…………………

That’s when I’ll finally pack my bags and fly from literally half around the world there, and it would be the coolest thing ever to see you play live in Melbourne city!! Plus, since your Europe tour is so badly arranged for my sake, those soon-to-be 8 months in Australia might be my only chance to see you live!

Have fun beating up the kangaroos. Say Hi to a wallaby for me. ;)

  73. Me :) says:

Awwww :( I wrote a whole thing and then it went away. :( oh well…. Here we go again. So I had never heard of Norma Jean or The Chariot before so I looked it up on iTunes. It’s screamo music! Hahahaha! It’s ok if you like it! Everyone has different choices of music. ;) and I prefer owl city that’s why him liking screamo weirded me out so much I guess…. I for one could not stand listening to that for 14 hours straight! It all sounds the same and I’m afraid my ears would explode! Hehe! Well I guess what I’m trying to say is…… Adam,do you really like that music or were you just joking?

  74. Allie says:

Have an awesome trip, Adam! Stock up on some Tim Tams while you are in Australia :)

  75. Bronwyn says:

Don’t make fun of Kangaroos! As a matter of fact, they are much stronger then one would say! You better leave the “Joey’s” alone, if you ever want to go back to America without having serious injuries.

By the way, although I’ve never been there, I’m sure I would love AustraliĆ«, it’s so full of life! Not to forget about death, the most dangerous spiders live there, the one with the red back (don’t know the English name..) and the Black Widow (wow, that name sounds even scarier in English as in Dutch!!). But after watching tons of programmes about the dark sides of Australia, I still see it as the beautiful land where Steve Irwin made the world meet with Australia’s deepest treasures!

    Anyway, have fun!

  76. Christian says:

I saw you guys at the airport in Minneapolis, I was picking up my sister, and I almost died when I saw you! I was heading back to Owatonna actually!

Anyway, have an awesome time Down Under!

I’d appreciate it if you’d ckeck out my blog. I posted a letter to you from a friend of mine on it and she’d be so happy if you’d read it.

The same year France gave America the statue of liberty they gave Sydney a pair of oranate toilets– they’re right under the harbor bridge. (Sydney-siders spent the late 1800s pissing in the street like animals)

Get used to peeing into a trough next to total strangers– that’s the uncomfortable fact about visiting Australia!

Oh my goodness…….that was my friend’s brain in blog form. I must inform him LOL.

  96. Psstt... says:

    PLATYPUS!

Did I catch your attention? Good. Now that you’re (hopefully) reading, I want to say that you are the coolest, wittiest, and downright WEIRDEST guy I’ve ever known. (in an odd, one-sided sort of way since we’ve actually never met physically and this is the first time I’m commenting on your blog but let’s not stress the details, shall we?) But we all know that weird is good, right? You’re only normal if you have a little bit of weird in you, and I like to think that everyone’s kind of a loon sometimes.

Anyways, good luck and enjoy your stay at New Zealand and Australia. If you have time, visit the Shire! (Lord of the Rings…good times, good times.) I hear that the sheep are pretty sheepy! (Whatever that means.) ;)

I have a request that you can shove into the dusty corner of your attic if you like, but if you have time, can you post a list of your favorite songs? I love your songs, but I want to know what songs YOU like!

    Hearts, prayers, and virtual cookies,

    E.

P.S. Oh, and another thing: have you ever considered becoming a fictional writer? Stephenie Meyer don’t hold a candle to you. In case you’re wondering, I fell in love with your post “I’ll See You in My Dreams”. It made me wish I could have a dream like that. :) Well, you got the sweatpants part right, at the very least. See ya.

  97. Razors says:

Let us know what you think about the Auckland Concert Chamber as a venue.

  98. Emily says:

Never underestimate those kangaroos. They’re actually quite powerful and have infamously powerful kicking strength with their hind legs. And they aren’t little either, even though they are plant eaters. Anyways whatever you do, have fun in Australia and New Zealand! I hope to be able to go there some day too it’s one of my travel goals before I die.

  99. Karey says:

I have enjoyed all the songs you have sang tonight! It was epic!!! The best evening i have ever had!!! This is my first time seeing you so up close, live!!! I felt like i was in a dream…Thank you for letting me exprience your melodies of fantasy and serenity… I hope that you have enjoyed your stay in Auckland. I love the sound of crickets too!!! It was great to meet you in person though you might not have notice me in the crowd… i was two rows behind…=(… anyway… Take care and have many more great performances in days to come in Australia and for decades to come…

    Karey^^

I thought that, if Adam Young ever sees it, and if anyone else here reads it, that they would be amused by the fact that although I’ve never seen a kangaroo punch anyone, I have in fact had a praying mantis punch me. It had its legs all bunched up, and I wanted to touch it, but like a boxer he suddenly lunged forward slightly, and his little arm shot out and hit my finger. I am a little awed to say that it actually stung. Although that was probably due more to the little poky things on his arm than the strength of his swing.
