One blustery evening last October, I waited impatiently until the clock tolled midnight and then promptly bought Taylor Swift’s new record on iTunes. I played it in the kitchen, I played it in the car, I played it at the studio, I played it on flights to Japan and back; I just couldn’t keep away from it. Speak Now was the indisputable leader of my “top 5″ record list of 2010, which is slightly ironic because the other four albums were abstract experimental/post-rock/ambient works.
I always love decoding the sneaky secret messages hidden in Taylor’s written lyrics, so naturally the day Speak Now came out, I played the whole thing from top to bottom as I added up the capital letters per each song’s set of lyrics.
As track 8 came to a close and the album switched over to track 9 (a breathtaking song called Enchanted and one of my favorites on the entire record), something began to feel curiously “familiar.”
I couldn’t put my finger on it. Why did the song feel so personal? Why was it ringing a bell? Perhaps it was merely the word “wonderstruck” that indeed struck a sweet chord, but before the second chorus hit, I’d already added up the letters:
A-D-A
And then it hit me like a freight train. I didn’t even need to find that last letter “M.” A colorful swirl of memories flashed before my eyes as it all added up. My jaw hit the floor.
The track is absolutely gorgeous and I’m so tremendously honored that Taylor would write such an elegant song and thereby offer a gracious nod in my direction. Needless to say, I was lost for words and utterly smitten. I couldn’t stop smiling.
I figured such an eloquent gesture should be reciprocated by the most polite, heartfelt and respectful response I could possibly muster. It’s no secret that I’m a bit shy, so naturally music was the most articulate way of attempting such a sincere endeavor. How does one respond to such a personal outpouring of emotion and sentiment? I tossed and turned over that one.
They say “timing is everything” and that brings us to now. Today is Valentine’s Day.

Taylor Swift has hidden messages in the lyrics of her songs written in the booklets of her CDs. If you look at the lyrics there are random capital letters and if you write them down in order they spell out a hint kind of as to what/who the songs about. Taylor’s song Enchanted has a hidden message that just says “ADAM” straight to the point haha. :)

Okay, so I am a giant Taylor fan and have loved Enchanted since the album release. I knew it was about a guy named Adam from Owl City, but never really invested much energy into that. However, this response seriously melts my heart! I adore TS and am so happy for her to have a great guy crushing on her back. All day I’ve listened to your version over and over and been embarrassingly giddy. I want you guys to be together so badly! It was defintely a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift. (And now can replace Valentine’s Day memories from the past.)

It was a real “a-ha” moment when she carefully read each word of your letter and realized that songs can be about real things – real feelings, real people. Being 8, she did think it might be embarassing to have a boy write a song about you that everyone could hear while I’m hoping this helps set her standards nice and high for exactly how a boy should treat a girl he likes! Do you know that The Story Of Us was written about John Mayer (well known to be a casual fornicator and drug abuser) as was Dear John and that TSOU was inspired after she wrote DJ? So after writing TSOU she would have done a 180 and taken him back if he had just BS’d her a little. In DJ she notes that he’s an expert at sorry. I love Taylor to death. I seriously am a fan but a realistic one. Please consider how bad it would be to be unequally yoked. LOTS of people who are unsaved call themselves Christians. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be truly prayerful and careful. Don’t be too shy to make sure she is a believer. Maybe the flowers she received from you and “left…there to die” would have been something other than roses. I don’t know your flower-giving preferences.
I also wonder if you know if the first track, “Sparks Fly,” was inspired by an October meeting with singer Jake Owen after she opened for him in PORTLAND, OREGON. Looking at the lyrics it seems her attitude toward bad boys showed way back then. In her blog soon after she mentioned that her favorite song on his album was “8 Second Ride.” She didn’t mention that it is a song celebrating a guy picking up a woman at a bar then having sex with her in the back of his pickup truck. So, really, given her attitude, dating a dope-smokin’ ho banger like John Mayer years later was not ultimately out of character for her. No, I didn’t say she slept with him and am reasonably sure she didn’t.
It pains me to say so many unhappy things Adam. I swear. I’ve been a Taylor fan and made somewhat of a study of her for nearly two years now and I genuinely care about her and you. *sigh* I honestly fear you and Taylor might just have a sad thing in common. I wrote “Enchanted” about a guy who I was enchanted to meet, obviously. He was somebody that I had talked to a couple of times on email, and then I was in New York and went to meet him.
I remember just the whole way home thinking, “I hope he’s not in love with somebody.” It was just wonderful, that feeling. Like, “Oh my gosh. Who’s he with? Does he like me? Does he like somebody else? What does it mean?” I got home and he had emailed me and said something like, “Sorry I was so quiet. I was just wonderstruck meeting you.” And so I incorporated the word wonderstruck, into the song as a, “Hey this one’s sorta for you.”
Me and my sister also decoded the secret messages in her lyrics book, and we saw that the one for Enchanted spelled “Adam,” but I, of course, had no idea it was about you.
I just to have to say… What you did was really really sweet. Enchanted has always blown me away and it was amazing hearing your version of it, especially because I know how much heart you put into it.
You and Taylor are two of my favorite musical artists. It’s cool to know that you guys are actually friends with each other. :)

This was the cutest thing ever. I could not stop smiling. I fell in love with Taylor’s music back when her first album came out and fell in love with your music the moment I heard the song Vanilla Twilight. You two being together possibly? omgoodness, cuteness overload! lol
When I decoded the lyrics of Taylor’s (for those of you who don’t know in her lyric booklet there are some letters capitalized while everything else is in lower case, its those capital letters that spell out a secret message, like in Enchanted it was ADAM), I was smiling from ear to ear when it sank in that she was talking about you. :)
